About The Plan

DID YOU KNOW...

Major Activities

1) Research - Every five (5) years ODOT conducts technical fact finding and prepares updates for the Long Range Plan to reflect current data on:

  • Transportation infrastructure
  • Land use and social characteristics
  • Personal travel and freight traffic patterns
  • Economic conditions and opportunities
  • Government safety and environmental requirements
  • Financial constraints and funding availability

The information gathered from the research serves as a baseline for each study update and serves to educate officials and the public on Oklahoma's current state of transportation.

2) Advisory Committees - Four Advisory Committees have been established by ODOT for the Long Range Plan effort to obtain perceptions on the current State Transportation system's strengths and weaknesses. The committees will also provide important guidance on policy direction and priorities to be included in the 2035 Long Range Plan. Information from the Advisory Committees will be shared with the public through this website and at public meetings that will be scheduled around the state. The four committees include:

3) Opportunities for Public Input

a. Public Meetings - ODOT will conduct rounds of public meetings during the next 24 months across the State to educate citizens about the transportation system and ask for comments on how to improve it. The Long Range Plan includes broad-based public outreach to diverse audiences and "stakeholders" across the State not only to meet federal participation requirements, but also to ensure the transportation plan reflects the needs and concerns of ODOT's citizens and that there is support for its implementation. Citizens can voice their opinion about the long range transportation plan at the public meetings or through a comment form found on this website or via U.S.

b. Surveys - At various phases of the study process, citizens will have the ability to complete online surveys via this web site as an additional method to collect public input, test ideas and introduce specific strategies.

4) Analyses and Solutions Development - It is essential that all technical information, public comment, industry and tribal group ideas are used effectively to develop solutions addressing:

  • Transportation system strengths and weaknesses
  • Future needs and system development
  • Affordability of future needs
  • Federal requirements
  • Alternative futures/risk and assessment

5) Reports to ODOT - Ultimately, the goal of this study is to develop a targeted Long Range Plan that responds to future needs that will enhance both transportation and economic development of the State of Oklahoma through 2035.

  • A draft report will be presented to the public for response and comment in the last round of public meetings before preparing the final draft report for ODOT.
  • This report will provide synopses, analyses and recommended actions for the following:
  • A Statewide Intermodal Transportation financing plan;
  • An analysis of the economic benefits of various policy initiatives, strategies, projects and a demonstration of tangible economic benefits of plan initiatives;
  • A short term and a long term transportation plan. A short term plan would include projects and policies that can be implemented relatively quickly and inexpensively. The long term plan would leverage these earlier actions to provide a long term program, including major capital investment projects;
  • A review of Federal requirements and funding issues and their likely impact on ODOT Statewide Planning;
  • Identification of potential future policy challenges, and
  • Project suggestions that relate to high priority state and national initiatives, such as National Highway System (NHS) High Priority Corridor Programs, Ports to Plains and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) for purposes of multi-state coordination and implementation.
